The story behind this winners sash…

Tasha Wakely and Elegido CXL VII took 1st place in the Novice freestyle to music class at Addington, the first of the winter regionals in the 2020 season, with a fantastic score of 73.426%.

Elegido is a Spanish horse who despite being only 15.2hh showed great presence in the arena. Tasha describes Elegido, who is owned by her mum, as an absolute angel and is almost 100% bombproof and not spooky at all, which is quite rare from her experience growing up riding Spanish horses. Tasha fell in love with Spanish horses when she was younger, she finds them intuitive and quick to learn and they give her a completely different feeling compared to other horses.

The duo’s test was accurate and impressive, and we were even more impressed when Tasha came to prize giving with her 12 week old baby. Tasha was back in the saddle just 11days after giving birth and despite being in and out of hospital for the first few weeks with her newborn she found time to train and is thankful for the support of her husband and family for making it possible. Tasha loves teaching and is a freelance dressage instructor based in Bedfordshire which gives her the flexibility to fit in family life and competing.

Elegido is the sort of horse you fall in love with, he was originally brought to Tasha to produce and sell but her whole family fell in love with him. Tasha explains how the world would be a much better place if there were another 20 more Elegido’s! Elegido is not just talented, he is also the perfect family horse, Tasha’s mum enjoys hacking him and Tasha does the schooling.

Elegido is also relatively new to the competitive circuit – his test at Addington was probably only his 12th ever show and the NAF winter regionals will be his first trip to Hartpury. The music for their test was actually created for another horse Tasha rode but she was able to write a new floor plan which worked really well and fitted the music. Tasha competed at Hartpury at Inter 1 a few years ago and is excited to be back and has big plans for the rest of 2020. She hopes to qualify for the MCI Europeans, GB pre-show and area festivals at medium level with longer term goals to compete at small tour, Prix St George.

Tasha in prime place at the podium! We wish her and Elegido the best of the luck for 2020!
