Seeing at it is the beginning of a brand new year we have picked our some of our favourite equestrian events happening in the UK in 2020. Don’t forget to save the dates!
29th February – Charlotte Dujardin’s Masterclass
Charlotte will be kicking of 2020 with a ‘through the levels masterclass’ showing off her training techniques from young horses through to Grand Prix, as well as sharing stories and tips. Her last UK masterclass was definitely full of suprises, the one and only Valegro made an appearance and those that attended will also know that a tradestand took flight in the wind and blew into the dressage arena (eek!) it was a good job Charlotte was on Valegro and not one of her younger horses who participated earlier in the day.
Tickets can be bought here.
6th-10th May – Badminton Horse trials
Badminton really needs no introduction, it is one of the biggest competitions of the eventing season and even if you can’t make it, this is definitely an event to livestream. It is one of the few equestrian events that gets TV coverage from BBC sport, so if you don’t fancy walking several miles on cross-country day to keep up with all the action you can still watch the whole event unfold!
Two fun facts about badminton:
- The very first European Championships were staged at Badminton in 1953.
- The prize money for the inaugural 1949 event was £150 to the winner and a total of about £500 in all. Whereas in 2018 the winner took home £100,000 and the overall prize fund (including competitors placed to 20th position) was £360,750.
9-14th June – Bolesworth International Horse Show
Bolesworth has been hit with serious amounts of rainfall when running its last few shows, this has been incredibly unfortunate and shouldn’t detract from this gorgeous venue, sporting a truly fabulous arena and some hot competition! It is a privilege to compete at Bolesworth with many classes being invitational only, providing a showcase of the riders and horses at the top of their game each year. In 2017 Matt Sampson had to specially write a song to let Nina give him a wild card to compete at the event which went down a hit on social media; check out the video below if you missed it.
July to August – Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics
Our top riders in showjumping, dressage and eventing will have been thinking about this for the last few years but the time is upon us. We have a super strong field of riders in all three disciplines and it is all up for grabs, wouldn’t it be wonderful to repeat the success of 2020!
We are keeping a close eye on two riders this year to see if they make it;
- Suzanna-Hext – with the potential to compete in both para-swimming and para-dressage Suzanna is a pretty exciting person to watch this year. It is an incredible feat to compete in one Olympic discipline, let alone two! especially given Suzanna only fairly recently started competing seriously in para-swimming. Can she qualify for both…
- Charlotte Fry – U25 European Champion in 2018 Charlotte has recently debuted on the senior European team at the age of just 23 (nearly 24, but still!). She has been close on the heels of Carl Hester and Charlotte, finishing 3rd after the pair on both nights at Olympia in 2019. Could she make it onto the olympic team in 2020…
7-11th October – HOYS
We have never personally been to this particular equestrian event but it seems incredibly popular, not just for showing but also showjumping and more recently dressage too and apparently there is some really good shopping too!
6-8th November – Your Horse live
Start saving your pennies now as this is often regarded as the UK’s biggest equestrian shopping event! It isn’t all about the shopping however, the show also boasts wordclass demonstrations from show jumpers, eventers and dressage riders. In 2019 the Irish Olympic duo Jonty Evans and Padraig McCarthy ran two fab sessions on the saturday and sunday.
More details can be found here.
15th – 21st December – Olympia
The christmas choice of most equestrians – Olympia is a great atmosphere with lots of showjumping, including the ever-popular puissance where horses make frighteningly large fences look like child’s play and more recently the new length and style Grand Prix tests have been tested out at Olympia. For dressage fans the freestyle to music evening is also pretty magical. AND the shopping is awesome.
Who doesn’t love Olympia…
1st-3rd Jan 2021 – Liverpool international horse show
The 2020 Liverpool event has only just happened but we couldn’t miss this off our calendar! With growing popularity amongst all top-level riders this competition, whilst fairly new has proved incredibly popular with a range of entertainment from stunt bikes to live music on-top of the dressage and showjumping competitions!
